Malaysia: Mandates 16+ Age Limit for Social Media in Major Safety Push
Hot on the heels of regional regulatory shifts, Malaysia has officially enacted its own strict digital safety rules. On 1 June, 2026, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) launched its new Child Protection Code, legally forcing social media platforms and internet messaging services to step up and actively protect younger users.
What’s changing?
The biggest takeaway is a hard boundary on age: you now have to be at least 16 years old to register an account or use social media platforms (like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube) in Malaysia.
To enforce this, licensed tech platforms must implement robust "safety-by-design" features, including:
Official Age Verification: Platforms can no longer rely on a simple "click here if you're over 13" checkbox. They must verify user ages against official government records (like passports or ID cards).
Privacy-First Defaults: Accounts belonging to minors must automatically be set to the highest possible privacy settings.
Strict Communication Gaps: The rules restrict stranger-danger by blocking random adults from messaging child users.
Safe Feeds: Algorithms, search bars, and recommendation engines are barred from showing or promoting harmful content to kids.
Parental Controls: Apps must provide clear, easy-to-use reporting tools and parental oversight controls.
What about data privacy?
Because the law requires tech companies to check official government records, the Code includes strict data privacy guardrails. Platforms are prohibited from hoarding this sensitive data, they can only collect the absolute bare minimum needed to verify an age, and they must delete it as soon as the verification is complete.
