APEC: to Launch AI Initiative by 2025, Pushes for Safer, More Connected Digital World

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) has set its sights on boosting artificial intelligence (AI) and digital connectivity, while making sure technology stays safe and trustworthy.

In a joint statement released on 5 August, 2025, ministers in charge of telecommunications, ICT, and digital policy from APEC’s member economies agreed on three main goals:

  • Encourage AI and other digital innovations to tackle social and economic challenges.

  • Improve internet access and digital connections for everyone.

  • Build a secure, reliable digital and AI ecosystem.

APEC leaders stressed the importance of trust, fairness, and safety when it comes to AI and other emerging tech. They reaffirmed support for cross-border data flows and stronger consumer protections in online transactions.

The group also backed the responsible use of new technologies to help economies become more productive, efficient, and resilient.

Looking ahead, APEC plans to create a new AI initiative, led by Korea by the end of 2025. This project aims to guide responsible AI development and foster cooperation across the Asia-Pacific region.
