South Korea: Government Investigates SK Telecom Data Breach

South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) shared the results of its investigation into a recent data breach at SK Telecom (SKT).

The breach happened on April 20, prompting MSIT and the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) to look into the issue. The Personal Information Protection Commission also recommended steps SKT should take to improve security.

According to the findings, SKT’s SIM cards are protected against SIM swapping, a common method used by hackers to take over phone numbers. The investigation also confirmed that SKT is successfully blocking attempts to use fake SIM cards to access its network.

The stolen data included customers' phone numbers and international subscriber ID numbers.
